Guide 101 · Applications

Which application should I choose?

An application is used to display, organize and play content on your device.

But be careful:

an application does not automatically provide channels, movies or series.

Several elements need to work together:

Device → Application → connection method → service

Step 01

1. What does the application do?

The application is the player used on your television, box, phone or tablet.

Depending on the application, it may display:

  • live TV;
  • a program guide;
  • movies;
  • series;
  • favourites;
  • catch-up content;
  • multiple playlists or services.

But the application alone generally does not give you the content.

A simple example

Installing TiviMate or MYTVOnline does not mean that you automatically have access to television.

You then need to add a compatible service to that application.

Step 02

2. TiviMate on Android TV and Android boxes

TiviMate is one of our favourite applications for Android devices designed for television.

It is particularly well suited to:

  • Android TV;
  • Google TV;
  • good Android boxes;
  • use with a remote control;
  • a large screen.

Its interface is designed to provide an experience similar to traditional television.

Depending on the setup, it can manage different connection types such as:

  • M3U playlist;
  • Xtream Codes;
  • a compatible portal.

Be careful

TiviMate is mainly designed for use on a television with a remote control.

It is not our first choice for a phone or touchscreen tablet.

Step 03

3. MYTVOnline and MYTVOnline+: they are not the same thing

The names are similar, but they are used differently.

MYTVOnline on Formuler

Formuler boxes use their own MYTVOnline ecosystem.

The available version depends on the model and generation of the Formuler box.

MYTVOnline is designed specifically for use on a television with a remote control.

It provides an experience strongly focused on:

  • live TV;
  • a program guide;
  • favourites;
  • navigation with a remote control.

MYTVOnline+

MYTVOnline+ is different.

This application is intended mainly for:

  • Android phones;
  • Android tablets;
  • iPhone;
  • iPad.

It is not intended for Android TV boxes or Google TV boxes.

It can support several compatible connection types directly on a mobile device.

Step 04

4. Samsung and LG: check the app store

Samsung and LG Smart TVs do not use Android.

Samsung

Samsung mainly uses Tizen.

Available applications can vary depending on:

  • the model;
  • the year;
  • the country or region.

LG

LG mainly uses webOS.

Again, the available applications depend on the model and the television’s app store.

Very important

An application available on Android is not automatically available on Samsung or LG.

Even if you find an application’s name online, it may not be available on your exact model.

Before choosing

Check directly:

Brand → exact model → operating system → app store

Step 05

5. iPhone, iPad and Apple TV

Apple devices have their own application ecosystem.

Several compatible players are available depending on the device, for example:

  • Smarters Player;
  • IBO Player;
  • other players available in the App Store.

But the selection is different from what is available on Android.

iPhone and iPad

They can work very well for watching content on a mobile device.

Some applications can also send content to a compatible television.

Apple TV

Apple TV offers excellent overall quality and a very smooth interface.

But the environment is more closed than Android.

Some specialized applications available on Android may therefore not exist on Apple TV.

Step 06

6. Android phones and tablets

Android generally offers a great deal of flexibility.

On a phone or tablet, several applications can be used depending on the type of service.

For example:

  • MYTVOnline+;
  • different compatible players;
  • official streaming service applications.

But Android phone/tablet ≠ Android TV

Even though they both use Android, an application designed for a phone is not always suited to a television.

And an application designed for Android TV is not always pleasant to use or compatible on a phone.

Step 07

7. The application must be compatible with the service

This is probably the most important point in this guide.

Not all applications work with every service.

A service may use:

  • a portal URL;
  • an M3U playlist;
  • Xtream credentials;
  • an official application;
  • another compatible connection method.

The application you choose must support the method used by the service.

A simple example

You can have:

  • an excellent television;
  • an excellent Android box;
  • an excellent application;

and still be unable to use a service if it is not compatible with that application.

Do not choose the service last

Before paying for an application or ordering a service, check:

Device → Application → connection type → service

All four need to work together.

Step 08

8. Free or paid application?

A free application may work very well for certain needs.

But a good paid application can sometimes offer:

  • a more pleasant interface;
  • a better program guide;
  • favourites;
  • management of multiple playlists;
  • a better experience with a remote control;
  • additional features;
  • less advertising or none at all.

However, price is not the only consideration.

A paid application that does not work with your device or service will be of no use to you.

Before choosing an application

Always check:

  • your exact device;
  • its operating system;
  • whether the application exists for that device;
  • the connection type being used;
  • whether the service is compatible;
  • who can help you with the installation if necessary.
